A Lost City Wall

Roman Coins

Canterbury has been a walled city since Roman times. The wall you can still see today is old, but is medieval, not Roman.

The Roman wall has gone but we know it ran through what is now Westgate Gardens – its remains still lie underground and that is why the whole of the Gardens is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. At the western end stood London Road gate, where Watling Street passed through the wall and into the Roman city.
