Step back in time with this British Pathe film of Westgate Gardens. This short black and white film of Canterbury park life was released in 1940 and filmed in the days before Canterbury was scarred forever by World War 2.Until well into the 20thCentury, Pathe News reports were the main source of televised news and information for most people in the UK. The pioneers of cinema focused on all aspects of life, from war and politics to sport and leisure. The Westgate film is one of a series entitled You Never Can Tell.
The 75-second film of Westgate includes boys fishing in the Stour, people strolling in the gardens and a park keeper up a ladder picking fruit from the apple trees which lined the river. The commentator, speaking in the clipped, precise way of the time, says it’s “as charming a retreat as you can find anywhere in England”. But some things don’t change. He makes the point that it’s in peaceful contrasts to the noise of the passing traffic.
We would like to hear what you think about the film and, who knows, you may even recognise someone. They may be a grand-parent, a parent or even you. You never can tell!
