Memorial Garden

A small area in Westgate Gardens commemorates all those from the UK and the Commonwealth who fought in Burma in 1941-5 and Italy in 1943-5, and who were awarded the Burma Star or Italy Star medals. During the Burma Campaign British forces were pushed back to the Indian border by the Japanese, and were unable to strike back and regain a foothold in Burma until early 1944. Following their successful conquest of Sicily in 1943, the Allies were able to use the island as a springboard for the invasion of mainland Italy, and then on into Greece and Yugoslavia, but at a cost of 300,000 killed, missing or wounded.
